Instagram to Pixelfed: Photo Sharing Migration

Instagram revolutionized photo sharing, but at a significant cost to user privacy and data ownership. Meta (Instagram's parent company) collects vast amounts of data about your photo viewing habits, locations, interests, and social connections. Your photos are stored on Meta's servers, compressed, and used for AI training and advertising purposes. Pixelfed offers a compelling alternative: decentralized photo sharing where you control your data, there's no algorithmic feed, and no surveillance advertising.

Why leave Instagram?

Migration steps

  1. 1. Download your Instagram data — Request a complete download of your Instagram data. Go to Settings > Your Activity > Download Your Information. Select all data types: photos, videos, stories, profile info, posts, reels. Choose HTML format and high quality. Click 'Request Download'. Save the download when it's ready.
  2. 2. Save original quality photos from your phone — Instagram compresses uploaded photos. For best quality on Pixelfed, export original photos from your phone's camera roll. Use your device's file manager to copy photos from Instagram's cache to a separate folder. Check both your camera roll and Instagram's saved media.
  3. 3. Choose a Pixelfed instance — Browse Pixelfed instances at pixelfed.org. Consider: pixelfed.social (official, USA), pixelfed.de (Germany), or a server based in your country or focused on your interests (photography, art, local community). European instances offer GDPR data protections.
  4. 4. Create your Pixelfed account — Go to your chosen instance's website and click 'Register' or 'Create Account'. Enter your email address, username (consider using your Instagram username), password, and profile information. Verify your email address to complete registration.
  5. 5. Set up your profile — Complete your Pixelfed profile: add a profile picture, header image, display name, bio, and website link. In your bio, mention that you're migrating from Instagram and how people can find you. Consider adding relevant hashtags to help others discover your profile.
  6. 6. Upload your photos — Upload your photos to Pixelfed. You can upload single photos or create collections (albums) for related photos. Add captions, hashtags, and location tags as desired. Pixelfed supports multiple photos per post and preserves original quality.
