WhatsApp to Signal: Privacy Migration Guide
WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app, but its ownership by Meta (Facebook) raises serious privacy concerns. While WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption for message content, Meta still collects extensive metadata—who you talk to, when, for how long, and from where. Signal, created by a non-profit foundation, offers superior privacy: open-source code, no tracking, no ads, and a commitment to user privacy that's written into its DNA.
Why leave WhatsApp?
- WhatsApp is owned by Meta (Facebook), a company with a poor track record on privacy
- Meta collects extensive metadata: who you talk to, when, for how long, your location
- WhatsApp shares data with Facebook for advertising and tracking purposes
- WhatsApp's encryption keys are stored on their servers, potentially accessible to Meta
- Meta's business model depends on data collection and targeted advertising
- WhatsApp requires a phone number, which can be used to identify and track you
- Meta has a history of data breaches and privacy scandals
Migration steps
- 1. Download Signal — Install Signal from the official app store on your device. For iOS: App Store. For Android: Google Play or F-Droid. For desktop: Download from signal.org. Never download from third-party sources.
- 2. Register with your phone number — Signal requires a phone number for registration (to find your contacts). Use your real phone number. Signal will send you a verification code via SMS. Enter the code to complete registration.
- 3. Allow Signal to access your contacts — Grant Signal permission to access your contacts. This allows Signal to automatically discover which of your contacts also use Signal, making it easy to start conversations. Signal only sees phone numbers, not names or other contact details.
- 4. Invite your contacts to Signal — Signal will show you which contacts already use Signal. For others, you can invite them via SMS. In the app: tap the pencil icon > New Group (or New Message) > type a contact name > Send Invite. You can also share your Signal username or QR code.
- 5. Export important WhatsApp chats — In WhatsApp: Settings > Chats > Chat History > Export Chat. Select the individual chats you want to save (group chats can't be exported). Choose whether to include media. Export via email or save to your device. Note: Exported chats are not encrypted in the export file.
- 6. Create group chats in Signal — In Signal: tap the pencil icon > New Group. Select contacts from your phone book who are already on Signal. Give your group a name. Note: You cannot migrate existing WhatsApp groups to Signal—you'll need to create new ones.
