Delete Instagram Account
Instagram started as a simple photo-sharing app but has evolved into a complex surveillance and advertising platform. Meta (Instagram's parent company) collects data on everything you do: photos you view, accounts you follow, stories you watch, messages you send, and your location. The platform uses sophisticated algorithms to manipulate your feed, show you targeted ads, and keep you engaged for as long as possible. Deleting your Instagram account removes your data from this surveillance ecosystem.
Why leave Instagram?
- Instagram (Meta) collects extensive data: photos you view, accounts you follow, stories you watch, DMs, location, device information
- Instagram's algorithm shows you content designed to maximize engagement, often prioritizing sensational or divisive content
- Meta uses your data to build detailed profiles for targeted advertising across Facebook, Instagram, and third-party websites
- Instagram tracks your activity across the entire web through pixels and embedded content
- Your photos and videos are stored on Meta's servers and can be used for AI training and other purposes
- Instagram's Explore page and Reels algorithm are designed to keep you scrolling indefinitely
- Meta shares your data with third-party advertisers, data brokers, and in some cases, government agencies
- Instagram's mental health impact, especially on young users, has been well-documented and is concerning
Migration steps
- 1. Download your Instagram data — Before deleting anything, request a download of your Instagram data. Go to Settings > Your Activity > Download Your Information. Select all data types: photos, videos, stories, profile info, posts, reels, etc. Choose your format (HTML or JSON) and quality. Click 'Request Download'. This may take hours or days to prepare.
- 2. Save your photos and videos separately — While the download will include your media, it's good to also save original quality photos and videos directly from your phone. Instagram compresses uploaded media. Use your phone's file manager to export photos and videos from the Instagram app to your camera roll or cloud storage.
- 3. Save important Direct Messages — Review your Instagram Direct Messages (DMs) for important information: conversations, addresses, phone numbers, agreements. Take screenshots or use Instagram's data download to save messages you need to keep. Remember that DMs will be deleted when you delete your account.
- 4. Update accounts that use Instagram for login — Some apps and websites allow you to log in using Instagram. Before deleting your account, update these to use email login instead. Check your Instagram Settings > Apps and Websites to see connected services.
- 5. Inform your followers and contacts — Post a story or feed post announcing that you're leaving Instagram. Provide alternative ways to follow you: Pixelfed username, blog, email newsletter, or other social media. Consider sending direct messages to close friends and family with your new contact information.
- 6. Create a Pixelfed account — Sign up for Pixelfed, a decentralized photo-sharing alternative. Browse instances at pixelfed.org and choose one based in your region or focused on your interests. Create an account and set up your profile. Consider using the same username as your Instagram handle.
